Runa is a desktop app that captures your computer’s audio to transcribe meetings. This page walks you through downloading, installing, and configuring Runa so it’s ready to record.
Runa needs permission to access your computer’s audio output in order to transcribe meetings. You’ll be prompted to grant this during setup — without it, Runa can’t capture what’s said in your calls.
1

Download the installer

Go to downloads.joinruna.com and download the macOS version of Runa. The file will download as a .dmg installer.
2

Install the app

Open the downloaded .dmg file. Drag the Runa icon into your Applications folder, then open Runa from there. If macOS shows a security warning when you first open the app, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
3

Grant audio permissions

When Runa opens for the first time, it will ask for permission to record audio from your computer. Click Allow in the system prompt. If you missed the prompt or need to enable permissions manually, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure Runa is toggled on. For system audio capture, check Screen Recording in the same Privacy & Security section.
4

Create your account

Sign in or create your Runa account directly inside the app. Use your work email address to sign up.
5

Run a test recording

Start a meeting on any platform (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, etc.) and click Record in Runa. Speak for a few seconds, then stop the recording. Confirm that a transcript appears — this means audio permissions are working correctly.

System requirements

Runa is a desktop app and runs on macOS and Windows. A stable internet connection is required for transcription and AI note generation.

Troubleshooting audio permissions

If Runa records but produces an empty or blank transcript, audio permissions are the most common cause. Double-check the following:
  • macOS: Confirm that both Microphone and Screen Recording access are enabled for Runa in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  • Windows: Confirm that Microphone access is enabled for Runa in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
After updating permissions, restart Runa and try a test recording again.
Runa captures audio from your computer’s system output — the same audio you hear through your speakers or headphones. It does not require access to your meeting platform’s internal audio stream.

Next steps

Once Runa is installed and permissions are set up, you’re ready to record.
